AN ARMORIAL ISTORIATO PLATE CASTELLI, 18TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF CARLO ANTONIO GRUE painted in rich blues and muted greens, brown, yellows and manganese on a cream ground with Hercules and Iolaus battling the Lernaean Hydra, the rim with putti holding floral garlands intersected at the top with a crowned stemma and at the bottom with a winged angel head within a cartouche, the underside.

This platter was produced by the workshop of Francesco Antonio Xaviero Grue, the son of the maiolica painter Carlo Antonio Grue (1655-1723). Francesco Antonio earned degrees in philosophy and theology from the University of Urbino, and was often called "il dotore maiolicaro," or the "doctor potter."
